The New Statesman primary target audience are those of a middle/upper class, generally aged from 35-54 and are at the peak of their profession and are left-leaning voters.
The house style is basic yet effective. Also, the colour scheme is minimalistic and features of dominantly white and red. The masthead is also placed at the top of the webpage and is in the same font. This is the same as the magazine covers and reinforces a recognisable brand identity due to the house style being the same throughout all its media products. This is also an example of cross media synergy due to the link between the magazine cover and webpage.
Throughout the webpage there are various subheading which divide the layout into individual sections. One subheading is ‘podcasts’ which allows the readers to click on and listen to the New Statesman’s podcast. Within this they talk about political topics and current affairs which are relevant, this will appeal to the target audience. The link to the podcast creates an active audience due to them being able to listen, and comment on the podcast. This is also an example of synergy, due to the webpage linking to another form of media.
There are subheadings such as Culture and Books, Politics, Latest Issues and more. The idea of using subheadings helps create an easy reading experience for the audience due to the clear layout.
Towards the bottom of the page there is a call to action which says, ‘Subscribe for just £2.31 per issue’. It says it is at a discounted price may persuade the reader to subscribe to the magazine. By adding a call to action new readers are more likely to take the time to subscribe. There is also an option to ‘gift’ a subscription to a friend. This engages the reader and allows them to share the reading experience with their friends, who also are likely to
be politically interested and be the target audience of the magazine.
